Underground storage tank testing should be a relatively easy process. The testing company sends out a certified technician to get rid of the manways and plug the fuel system supply. The technician will perform some initial calculations. The test process starts when the tank testing equipment is inserted into the tank fill pipe. However, things rarely run smoothly, which impacts the entire process.
Common Issues with Underground Storage Tank Testing
Fill Pipes and Vent Pipes
Fill pipes loosen due to the vibration during the delivery of fuel. Vent pipes often become loose due to the location of the tank.
Leaks that are found at manways regularly happen when the sump is loose. The rubber seals will eventually need to be replaced. Technicians can discover a manway leak by adding helium to the tank.
Check values help keep a fuel pump primed. Check values can erode over time, which causes air to go through the value.
Tank EPA Requirements
The Automated Tank Gauges normally handle the tank testing requirements at different facilities. The ATGs adhere to EPA leak detection requirements. If the equipment is not up to par, the state may mandate additional testing. In some cases, the buyer may need to provide paperwork in order to validate the condition of the UST. Consumptive use tanks have their own set of leak detection requirements. Underground storage tanks that are attached to free pumps that do not have Automatic Tank Gauges are subject to annual tests.
Preparing For Testing
If the facility has an underground storage tank, then you should consider having your tank inspected before scheduling the test. Changes to the configuration of the underground storage tank are necessary. The tank may be blocked by some structures such as trash compactors or roll-off containers.
Most test methods undergo an evaluation by the National Work Group on Leak Detection Evaluations. All of the technicians performing the testing should be trained and certified to use the equipment. The certification number must be included on the tank test report.
Underground Storage Tank Testing Problems
A spill container with 45 degree elbows does not give technicians the opportunity to gain access to the tank. The technician cannot properly measure the water and fuel levels. The diameter of the tank is also compromised, which can cause major problems. Technicians need an access point to install their instruments.
Rusted Overfill Prevention Valve
A rusted valve may cause the aluminum tube to connect to the steel riser pipe. The technician cannot use their instruments if the rusted valve is restricting their access.
Dirty Test Point
Problems occur when the test point is filled with soil. Most technicians do not have the proper tools to remove soil inside the tank sumps. To prevent soil buildup, the owner should look at the manway every month and clear any built up particles inside the tank sump. A clean tank sump provides technicians with easy access to the test point, while also preventing soil and water from infiltrating the piping.
